James HathawayProfessor James Hathaway is the James E. and Sarah A. Degan Professor and director of the University of Michigan’s Program in Refugee and Asylum Law. He is also Distinguished Visiting Professor of International Refugee Law at the University of Amsterdam and Professorial Fellow of the University of Melbourne. Among his more important publications are a leading treatise on the refugee definition, The Law of Refugee Status (1991, second edition with M. Foster to be published in 2014); an interdisciplinary study of refugee law reform, Reconceiving International Refugee Law (1997); and the first comprehensive analysis of duties owed to refugees under international law, The Rights of Refugees under International Law (2005). During 2013-2014 Jim is Visiting Professor at Stanford University’s Center for International and Security Cooperation and Visiting Distinguished Scholar at the University of San Francisco School of Law.
