Why we need to amplify refugees voices in order to shift the displacement narrative
Humanitarian work throughout the world helps millions of refugees escape wars, persecution, or other threats to their safety. The next step is working together with refugees as they rebuild their lives. Deepa Nambiar discusses how we can challenge wider perceptions of refugees and recognize the value they offer society.
Less than one percent of the world’s refugees are resettled into a new country. The vast majority remain in a state of limbo, receiving aid but unable to benefit from legal protections that would allow them to work legitimately, gain an education or access healthcare. Asylum Access aims to empower refugees, advocating for their human rights. Deepa explains that championing organization leaders who are refugees themselves is one way to shift the narrative. By amplifying refugee voices, we are more likely to think of them less as passive recipients of aid and more in terms of the array of skills they can contribute.
